Sexual Assault Investigation – 1 Day

Sexual assaults occur everywhere, and reporting may be misleading in regard to frequency and the nature of the attacks. Crimes often involve a sexual assault that was not the primary offense, or officers fail to identify the true nature of the offender and never discover additional offenses and evidence.

Sexual predators vary from highly prolific to occasional episodes, and from comparatively low danger levels to the most vicious and skilled murderers. All officers need to be aware of the various offender typologies in order to recognize offenses and evidence for what they are, but officers may need differing skill levels, especially when it comes to interviewing these offenders.

This course is a segment of the 4 Day Sexual Assault Investigation course, for those who will be the first responders or who may handle preliminary investigations, but may not be responsible for a long term, in-depth investigation. The 4 Day program provides greater detail and examination of the psychology of sexual predators and their methods. While this level may not be needed for all, certainly all who may respond to a sexual assault need to have an understanding and skill level beyond what was provided in the academy. Without it you will miss and destroy evidence, fail to recognize a need for more detailed and more expert follow-up, and you may never identify the most dangerous offender you will ever encounter for what he really is.

This course is appropriate for patrol officers / initial responders, and any investigators who need to expand on the basics. The psychological make-up of offenders will be explained, as well as their various behavioral and evidentiary indicators. Special attention will be given to interviewing recommendations for each type of offender.
