Law Enforcement Peer Support Training
The Law Enforcement Peer Support Training Course is a practical course of instruction designed to prepare law enforcement peer counselors to conduct organizational psychological debriefings, provide peer counseling, and make appropriate referrals for peers in need of professional intervention. This unique course provides the newly assigned peer counselor with an understanding of police stress, the physiological aspects of stress, an overview of mental health issues, factors in police suicide, effective communication, and drug and alcohol use and abuse. Students will learn how to conduct psychological debriefings set up and manage peer support programs, and provide support for police families. Special emphasis on the stress of undercover operations, assignment to high-risk or specialized teams, exposure to critical incidents, and the effects of a depressed economy will be addressed. A dynamic case study illustrating the importance of peer counseling will be presented by a member of law enforcement who has experienced the effects of police stress.
